‘Vilnius: The G-Spot of Europe’ tourism campaign fails to rub people the right way

A new tourism campaign for Lithuania’s capital city is getting people hot and bothered due to its shamelessly sexual approach to attracting visitors.

The campaign calls Vilnius “the G-spot of Europe” because “nobody knows where it is, but when you find it – it’s amazing.” The accompanying image shows a woman lying on a bed sheet printed with a map of Europe, in the throes of passion, her hand tightly gripping Lithuania.

Such an ad would likely have proved controversial at the best of times, but with Pope Francis due to visit next month it is proving a particularly touchy subject – especially with the Catholic Church. Some priests in Lithuania have deemed it inappropriate and expressed concerns it might give foreign visitors “wrong ideas” about local women.

The Lithuanian Prime Minister, Saulius Skvernelis, is a little more supportive. “I think it’s a strange advertising choice, but I believe it does not cross the line in a democratic country,” he told Lithuanian public broadcaster LRT.

It might not come as much of a surprise that the campaign was thought up by advertising students, who were tasked with bringing international attention to Vilnius.

“Few people know where Vilnius really is, but when they arrive they fall in love with the city,” said Jurgis Ramanauskas, one of the ad’s creators. “This insight came from our conversations with international visitors, and we formulated the idea that Vilnius is synonymous with the G-spot theory – nobody knows where it is, but when it is discovered, everyone is very pleased!”
